I've been hunting for a clean second generation TTS for a few months now and finally found one in the right color with reasonable mileage and a price that isn't completely ridiculous, but the seller's ad proudly states that the gearbox was rebuilt about 15,000 kilometers ago. Part of me thinks great, that's a major expense already taken care of and I won't have to worry about it, but the skeptical part of me wonders why someone would spend all that money on a rebuild and then sell the car so soon after. I called the seller and he seemed upfront about it, said the mechatronic failed and he had the whole thing done properly with receipts to prove it, and he's selling because he's moving back to the UK next month. The receipts look legitimate from a shop I've actually heard of, and the price of the rebuild was eye watering even three years ago when it was done, so it does seem like he cared about doing it right. I'm planning to have a pre purchase inspection done regardless but I wanted to ask the collective wisdom here, when you see a car with a rebuilt gearbox in its history is that a green flag or a red one? I also stumbled across http://auditransmissionrepair.ae/ while researching what to look for and they have some useful pointers about checking the quality of previous repairs, like looking for OEM parts on the invoice rather than cheap alternatives. Would you buy a TT with a rebuilt DSG or keep looking?
Saw a TT for sale with "recent gearbox rebuild" should that reassure me or scare me off?
