Whether you are single or with a partner, whether you love or loathe Valentine’s Day, February seems to be the time to consider love and relationship.

You’ve heard it before… “love yourself first”. Well, sometimes, cliches are cliches for a reason. The truth is, the most important relationship you’ll ever have is the one you have with yourself.

Life is busy. Often you get pushed down to the bottom of your own priority list, and end up depleted, tired, short tempered, and burnt out. People often think taking time for just themselves is selfish, especially when they are so overscheduled and don’t have any ‘spare’ time. This reminds me of a saying: “Meditate for 15 minutes each day… unless you don’t have time… then meditate for an hour.”

Balance it out!

It’s good to be busy and use your time as fully as you can, but don’t forget yourself in the equation. Taking care of yourself IS taking care of others. You are worth your time, attention and focus. Think of the ways you show and express that you care for and love your family and friends… you spend time with them, listen to them, and support them. To love yourself, you have to do these things for yourself.

When you practice yoga, your focus is completely on yourself, your alignment, your body, your breath… you aren’t thinking about what’s for dinner or your next appointment or financial issues or anything.

This ‘clearing’ of your mind, is healthy and helps you feel more grounded and balanced so that you can actually be more productive and calm throughout the stresses of the day. Yoga teaches you to listen to yourself, to discern how much is enough and how much is too much, to be fully present, to stay calm in challenging situations, and to accept and celebrate all that is you. Of course, yoga isn’t the only way to nurture yourself (I realize that I am biased.)

Do something you love every day, something that is just for you, even if it’s only for a little while.

Schedule alone time; eat healthy, fresh food; take a ski day; go for a walk; take a vacation with your family or friends. Journaling is also especially helpful to ‘get things out’ or to process your thoughts and feelings.

Remember that taking care of yourself is ultimately a gift to others, and although people may come and go from your life, you are always and forever with yourself. So take time each day to do something nice for yourself, and make a lifelong practice of loving the one you’re with.
